Frank is a restaurant that I’m 93% sure was made for me.
The small and cozy cabin like restaurant is located in the East Village. It features an exciting specials board and a wine list that has legs for days. It offers side walk eating during Summer and intimate dining during winter. The hustle and bustle of the open kitchen is free for all to see and the wait staff is friendly as.
I wrote about my favorite dish: Broccoli, anchovies and garlic pasta, a while back. Sadly, this pasta has not become one of the greats (i.e. carbonara, bolognese) so for the sake of this post lets just call it Bianca Pasta*.
Anyway, and much more to the point, Frank is one of the few Italian restaurants I’ve been to with Bianca Pasta on the menu. My heart melts every time I read the description: broccoli, garlic and E.V. olive oil. So simple, so plain, but so comforting. I can’t put into words the feeling of being 150% sure everything on the plate you’ve ordered will satisfy you. As is the case with Frank’s Burrata Mozzerela, a semi permanent specials option that comes to your plate all the way from Puglia.
This last visit to NYC I was secretly hoping Bianca Pasta had vanished from the menu so that, after years of ordering the same thing, I could try something new. Maybe something off their Daily Specials menu, I had my eye on Sunday’s Black Linguini with Frutti di Mare and Wednesday’s Spaghetti with Meatballs. Frank is a red sauce specialist after all, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
Not one person I’ve been to Frank with has shown an ounce of interest in the Bianca pasta, and that’s totally okay. Totally okay. It doesn’t offend me. I swear. It just goes to show the extensive diversity* of the menu.
I would, 100 times over, recommend Frank as a date night spot, or a girls only date night, or a my-family-is-in-town-and-I-wanna-impress-them date night. Basically, it’s a date night spot. So don’t you dare go ruining the atmosphere with a business meeting, you know who you are.
*Bianca Pasta is still the best.
** Frank’s Bianca Pasta doesn’t come with anchovies. I beg for them to be added.
