The menu at Mimi Chengs, in the East Village, is all about dumplings. You can order these expertly made dumplings in three varieties: the Mimi Cheng (chicken), the Reinvented Classic (pork) or the Mighty Veggie (kale, zucchini, and egg). Then, you can decide to have them lightly pan-fried in canola oil or boiled. They will come filled with scallions, fresh ginger and other organic goodies either way.
Mimim Cheng’s dumplings are paving the way for a healthy version of the Chinese delights. Hannah and Marian Cheng, the sisters behind the growing empire, know fitness and live a mindful lifestyle. They are cooking up dumplings the way their mom made the dish for them growing up, using only healthy, fresh and local ingredients.
With its polished white walls, its neat but always busy tables, its vibrant accents of yellow and its colorful concrete floors, the clean and polished space inspires healthy eating.
That’s the whole reason the girls decided to open the eatery. They searched all of New York City for a place that served dumplings as good as the ones their mom made. When they couldn’t find that, they “simply” decided to open their own. With their mom’s recipe for home-made dumplings and her “secret sauce” (which you should drench them in), the girls are filling the gap for healthy-style dumplings in a health-crazed city. They’ll be as good, if not better, than they look.
As an added bonus, Mimi Cheng’s offers a special dumpling flavor monthly – this one tends to sell out quickly so get in early. And to make thing even better, the girls run a How To Dumpling class every other Monday evening. What fun!
Now. If only I could get my mom to give me the recipe for her incredible arepas, my sister and I could start an arepa empire of our own!
