I was introduced to Blue Ribbon Bakery Kitchen in New York City’s West Village when I was 22 by an ex-boyfriend. He was a clean eater, but a foodie nonetheless, and this was his go-to restaurant. For the six months we dated, we went to Blue Ribbon once a week without fail. It’s also where he met my family. I forget what plate he used to order, something healthy for sure, but he always encouraged me to get the fried chicken (and use the leftovers in a salad for dinner) and treat me to bread pudding for dessert. I thought it was love.
Life happens though and things seriously chance. People break up, accidentally find a new boyfriend, move to Australia and marry new boyfriend.
Now, it’s my family who is obsessed with Blue Ribbon Bakery Kitchen. We’re so obsessed in fact, every time we visit we act VIPs. We greet the manager and staff like they recognize us from our frequent visits. Kudos to them for playing along and engaging us in “catching up”. They really have the friendliest wait staff.
The Blue Ribbon Bakery Kitchen is located on the corner of Downing St. and 6th Ave among other beautiful brick buildings the Village is famous for. The floor to ceiling windows show off the homely dining room on the first floor. You can smell the fresh bread from the outside. If you wander down the stairs you’ll find the wood-fired ovens and understand why the bread basket at the start of your meal tastes so dang fresh and delicious.
We have a bit of a routine. First, we order wine. If we get there in time for the brunch menu, we order the French toast. If not, we order the sardines and the bone marrow to start. One thing that hasn’t changed is my order: fried chicken, please. These days though, I share the plate with someone and order the brussels sprouts instead of fries. This is the fried chicken that sparked my love affair with the crispy dish – YOU MUST ORDER IT.
The bread pudding on offer is always ordered and devoured. After Jack and I got engaged my sister, Jack and I celebrated with bread pudding from Blue Ribbon at Brooklyn Bowl. It’s a real special, truly satisfying dessert.
I know it’s naughty to have fried chicken and bread pudding in one sitting but sometimes you just have to live a little.
Plus, you’re in NYC. You’re walk it off in no time.
